Egypt Travel Guide - Ancient and Modern Egypt

Egypt is probably the world's oldest civilization having emerged from the Nile Valley around 3,100 years ago and is also probably one of the oldest vacation spots. Early Greeks, Romans and others went there just for fun, and to see the wonders of some of mankind's earliest triumphs. The country is much more than Pyramids and monuments. It is also Red Sea scuba diving, hot night spots, luxury hotels and five star restaurants. It is romantic cruises down the Nile on festive river boats, a night at the grand opera and a cultural experience like none you have ever experienced. Egypt is a land bustling with life, sound, visual beauty and excitement. For thousands of years, Egypt has been the playground of emperors and kings.

“He who hath not seen Cairo, hath not seen the world. Her soil is gold; her Nile is a marvel; her women are like the black-eyed virgins of Paradise; her houses are palaces; and her air is soft, sweet as aloeswood, rejoicing the heart. And how can Cairo be otherwise, when she is the mother of the world”

The streets of modern Cairo have somewhat changed since earlier times. Nevertheless, amidst today’s chaos, pollution, honks, dust, and 16 million people, Cairo, the city of one thousand minarets,  still retains that quite, mystical beauty of the past. You just need to look a bit closer.  See webcam of Egypt's Great Pyramids.

The second largest city in Egypt, Alexandria, known as "The Pearl of the Mediterranean",  has an atmosphere that is more Mediterranean than Middle Eastern; its ambience and cultural heritage distance it from the rest of the country although it is actually only 225 km. from  Cairo. Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 B.C., Alexandria became the capital of Graeco-Roman Egypt, its status as a beacon of culture symbolized by Pharos, the legendary lighthouse that was one of the Seven Wonders of the World.  The setting for the stormy relationship between Cleopatra and Mark Anthony, Alexandria was also the center of learning in the ancient world.

In upper Egypt (south of Cairo), Luxor is probably the most interesting, as well as the oldest, tourist destination in Egypt, formerly the ancient city of Thebes, is over 4,000 years old. The city is loaded with tourists, modern Hotels, tourist bazaars, horse-drawn carriages, felucca masts, Pharaonic temples and ancient tombs making this open-air museum a great blend between past and present.

For the Ancient Egyptians Aswan was the end of the world, it is where Egypt stops and the Nubia and Sudan begin. Aswan is Egypt's southern most city, and with temperatures in summer reaching 115°F, it has always been a favored winter resort. It is also home to the historical Elephantine Island, the Botanical Gardens and Egypt's primary source of power, the High Dam.
